Most universities in Germany are state-funded. Few institutions are run by the Protestant or the Catholic Church. There are now more than 80 private universities whose degrees are recognized by the state. The majority of these are colleges.

Most students in Germany, however, are enrolled at public universities. Only three percent attend a private university. The reason is that at private universities to charge high tuition fees are required. The quality of instruction at both types of institutions comparably good.

Important to know: The education system in Germany is not controlled centrally. Each of the 16 states has its own laws and university policies. In addition, the universities in Germany are largely independently. Much is therefore not regulated uniformly for all institutions. Therefore applies: Ask for more, what laws apply to the university of your choice.
