History of the University
In 1891, philanthropist Amos Throop ,Throop University in Pasadena created and opened with 31 students and six disciplines of science and engineering. The creation of this institution attracted influential scientists such as the astronomer George Ellery Hale, Arthur Amos Noyes chemist and physicist Robert Andrews Millikan.
In 1921, thanks to the initiative of these scientists was renamed the institution was renamed the California Institute of Technology.
It was created with a mission to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education. During his years of research have addressed the fundamental problems of science and technology in an interdisciplinary environment.
Proof of this commitment to academic excellence is the fact that in 1934 the college was part of Association of American Universities, joining leading universities in research.
It gradually expanded its educational discipline and added materials such as biology, geology, aeronautics, astronomy, astrophysics, social science and computer science.
Among the achievements of the university highlights the discovery of vitamin C by the researcher Linus Pauling in 1930. In the field of geophysics also highlights the discovery of one of his famous students, Charles Richter, creator of the scale to measure the intensity of earthquakes.
