Studies in the UK : Before Leaving - Accommodation

In many cities there is more demand British universities that offer student housing, so once you have decided where to go, you should start looking for accommodation. Many colleges help their students find a room in the residence halls or student apartments.

» University Housing:

If your host university residences available, live in will help you make friends and meet other students and participate from day one in the social life of the university.
There are two types of residence hall:

•Halls of Residence: Large buildings with single or shared. In some halls (the oldest) are shared bathrooms. Most feature phones and lounge serving breakfast and dinner. It is the most expensive option.

•Self-catering halls: Residential rooms and kitchens where residents can store food and make their meals. It is the ideal choice for many foreign students, because they can choose their meal times and eat according to your tastes. Sometimes buildings are large, complex and sometimes houses.

Must apply university accommodation before coming to college. Search the Accommodation Office on your website host university, and contact them.

» Other types of accommodation:

If you prefer to seek alternative accommodation, cheaper or more independently, there are several possibilities:

• Student hostals, inns offering accommodation, food and sometimes let their guests make their own food.

• Lodgings, a rented room in a private house. You will have to adapt their lifestyle to theirs and the degree of independence is less, but this option has the advantage of having company and learn how to live the British.

• Shared student house, a room in a rented house and shared with other students. It is usually the cheapest option. Often the quality of the houses is not very good, but for many it is a great advantage to share with other college students. Normally you have to bring sheets, towels, etc..

• Bedsits, studios many times in big houses, they are stories of a room where you have to live and sleep. Sometimes you have to share kitchen and bathroom with other tenants.

If you sign a contract to rent a room or house, you should read it carefully before signing and get receipts for all payments you make. If you need legal help, you can go to the so-called Law Centre or Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).
